Challenge

Bardo seeked a premium look for their packaging during the upcoming Tet holiday, featuring their special dried squid products coming in various sizes. Bardo desires to pay homage to Vietnamese fishermen and reflect a traditional Vietnamese style in their packaging.

Bardo expected this new packaging would convey brand's story and values that Bardo treasures.

Most of the products are dried and frozen, so the packaging needs to take this into account to preserve the food and ensure the packaging is not damaged when given as a gift. Furthermore the new packaging needed to accommodate the products that come in various sizes.

Solution

To achieve "traditional Vietnamese style", we developed the "Old Viet Nam" aesthetic, utilizing vintage fonts and colors. We incorporated a unique feature of Vietnamese culture by using kraft paper with a design resembling slim morning newspapers that were traditionally and commonly used to wrap fresh food and stored in fridges by most of Vietnamese moms.

The "newspaper" contains informative articles about the Bardo brand and its products, including their values, their brand's story, the story of Vietnamese fishermen, product details, origin information, cooking instructions, and tips and tricks for preparing their specialties. These articles serve to reinforce the Bardo brand and highlight the unique qualities of their products.

This "newspaper" would be printed as a wrapper using Kraft paper, with one side laminated to prevent damage from defrosting during delivery. Since the new packaging is designed as a wrapper, it will effectively solve the problem of accommodating products that come in different sizes.

The "newspaper" will be accompanied by a band that displays information about the dried squid products, such as usage and cooking instructions, manufacturing date (MFG) and expiration date (EXP), a thank you note from the brand, and a blank box indicating the weight in kilograms. The weight will be handwritten based on the actual weight of the products at the time of packaging.

Outcome

The "Old Vietnam" aesthetic successfully blends traditional Vietnamese style with vintage fonts, colors, and kraft paper, creating a visually appealing and culturally resonant packaging concept. I'm delighted to share that the owner was happy with my design and didn't require any further adjustments. I simply replaced the placeholder text with the actual content provided by clients only.

I also had the opportunity to provide some guidance on the printing process, ensuring that the final product aligns perfectly with our design vision. With both of us in agreement, we happily signed off on the project. It's been a pleasure working together, and I'm looking forward to more successful collaborations in the future!

It's great working with Jo, professional and always on time. I absolutely love this new packaging that Jo crafted. It's this fantastic blend of premium style and a respectful nod to Vietnamese tradition. That "Old Viet Nam" vibe she infused is just spot on. Jo's attention to even the tiniest details, like preserving the products and daily newspaper concept, is truly impressive.
